Don’t Get Hacked
Protecting Yourself Online is More Important Than Ever
April 2026
In today’s digital world, staying connected is easier than ever, but so is becoming a target. From data breaches to phishing scams, cyber threats are growing fast, and they’re hitting everyday people across the country.
The good news? A few simple steps can make a big difference.
The following tips come from Smart Rural Communities, a national initiative focused on helping rural Americans stay safe, informed, and connected. As a member of the NTCA – The Rural Broadband Association, BEK Communications is proud to be a Smart Rural Community provider, bringing not only reliable service, but valuable resources to protect our members.
Data breaches are happening every day, and most of them rely on stolen passwords. The average person now manages more than 100 passwords, many of them reused. That’s exactly what hackers are counting on.
If one account is compromised, criminals can try that same password across your email, banking, and social media accounts. This is called “credential stuffing,” and it works more often than you’d think.
Protecting yourself doesn’t have to be complicated. Start with these key steps:
Create Strong, Unique Passwords
Use long passwords (at least 16 characters) and avoid using the same one across multiple accounts. Consider using a passphrase, a series of random words that’s easier to remember but harder to crack.
Use a Password Manager
A password manager securely stores your logins and can generate strong passwords for you. It’s one of the easiest ways to improve your security overnight.
Turn on Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)
MFA adds a second layer of protection, like a code sent to your phone or a fingerprint scan. It can stop nearly all automated attacks before they even begin.
Watch Out for Phishing Scams
Phishing scams are designed to trick you into giving away personal information. They often look like messages from trusted companies but contain fake links or urgent warnings.
Here are some red flags to watch for:
- Messages that create urgency (“Act now!” or “Your account will be locked!”)
- Suspicious email addresses or phone numbers
- Requests for personal or financial information
- Links that don’t match the official website
When in doubt, don’t click. Go directly to the company’s website or call them using a trusted number.
What to Do If Your Information Is Exposed
If you think you’ve been part of a data breach, act quickly:
- Change your passwords immediately.
- Turn on MFA for all accounts.
- Set up account alerts and monitor activity.
- Consider placing a fraud alert or credit freeze.
- Take advantage of any credit monitoring services offered.
Cybercriminals are always evolving, but so can you. By staying alert to scams, you can protect your personal information and keep your digital life secure. At BEK, we believe connection should bring peace of mind, not risk. Stay informed, stay cautious, and stay protected.
