FBI Warning
Some Streaming Devices Could Put Your Home Network at Risk
January 2026
BEK Communications Cooperative wants to help keep our members informed and safe online. Recently, the FBI issued a public warning about a growing cybersecurity threat tied to low-cost Android TV streaming boxes sold online under unfamiliar brand names, like VSeeBox and SuperBox.
According to the FBI, a malware campaign known as Badbox 2.0 has infected millions of internet-connected devices, including TV streaming boxes. Many of these devices were manufactured overseas and may already contain hidden malware when they are purchased, or they may become infected during setup.
Once connected to your home network, these devices can quietly become part of a botnet, allowing hackers to use your internet connection for criminal activity without your knowledge. Because these devices stay online, they can be used as launching points for scams, data theft, or other cyberattacks.
What Should You Watch For?
The FBI says it can be difficult to identify affected devices, but there are clear warning signs:
- Streaming devices from unknown or unrecognized brands
- Devices with unofficial or “suspicious” app stores
- Requests to disable Google Play Protect
- Devices that lack Google Play Protect certification
- Ads or prompts offering free streaming content from unofficial sources
Some of these devices are sold online for $30–$50 and may use names like “TV98” or “X96,” though the FBI notes the threat may extend beyond specific models.
How to Protect Your Home Network
To reduce your risk:
- Avoid downloading apps from unofficial app stores
- Disconnect any device that seems suspicious
- Consider replacing questionable streaming boxes with products from well-known, trusted brands
- Keep your devices updated and review connected devices on your network regularly
